The story

Pørni is about the dilemmas that you end up in when you, to the best of your abilities, try to do the right thing for your loved ones, and yourself. In that order. Pørni has two daughters with a jerk of an ex who has moved to Copenhagen, who focuses mainly on himself.

What it’s like

Warm, wry and grounded, this Danish series reads as a domestic comedy-drama, the kind to put on for an easy evening after a long week. Its look is likely everyday and unshowy, with the rooms of a family home and the ordinary rhythms of school runs, work shifts and kitchen-table talk doing most of the work. Its humour is dry and character-led, with moments that can turn tender or quietly sad, particularly around grief and the loss of someone close. The pace suits a casual, lean-in viewing rather than a gripping binge, with each episode settling into its people. Its arcs centre on a single mother trying to balance her daughters, her own needs and a work life that keeps pulling at her, while the absent father's self-absorption adds friction without tipping into melodrama. Its intensity is low: the material is emotional and domestic rather than violent, frightening or graphic. It is for viewers who want a relatable, humane comedy about family, growing up and getting through hard stretches with some laughs along the way.
