The story

A wooden puppet embarks on a thrilling adventure to become a real boy.

What it’s like

Warm amber lamplight pools across a cluttered Italian woodshop, with clocks, carved toys and curling wood shavings, and the village outside is a painted-storybook world of cobbled lanes and sunlit piazzas rendered in photoreal CGI that keeps a soft, handmade texture. The camera drifts through these spaces in long, unhurried moves, lingering on tactile details like joints creaking and paint chipping, while the orchestral score by Alan Silvestri swells gently with folk-tinged melodies and a few sung numbers. Pacing is leisurely and sincere, with brief moments of unease, such as a sinister carnival island where children transform, and a murky sea journey, but the peril stays mild and PG-rated, with no gore. Emotionally it is warm and sentimental, centred on a lonely craftsman and a small wooden boy learning kindness, and its arcs unfold with gentle, earnest care. It suits a rainy Sunday with family, a comfort rewatch, or a quiet evening when you want something wholesome, nostalgic and tender. It is made for people who love classic fairy tales, musical fables and cozy, big-hearted storytelling.
