The story
Thrust into an all-new adventure, a down-on-his-luck Capt. Jack Sparrow feels the winds of ill-fortune blowing even more strongly when deadly ghost sailors led by his old nemesis, the evil Capt. Salazar, escape from the Devil's Triangle. Jack's only hope of survival lies in seeking out the legendary Trident of Poseidon, but to find it, he must forge an uneasy alliance with a brilliant and beautiful astronomer and a headstrong young man in the British navy.
What it’s like
Bright Caribbean daylight gives way to murky greens and blue-black night in this fifth Pirates film, with heavy digital effects that make the ghost ship crew glow in pale, drowned blues and the sea look thick and swollen. The camera moves with brisk, sweeping energy: wide establishing shots of tall ships under big skies, quick cuts through crowded port towns, and gleaming gold coins and sun-bleached wood throughout. The score is orchestral and bombastic, built on the familiar Pirates swagger with thundering drums and swelling brass. The vibe is a loud, nostalgic swashbuckle, fun and warm but a touch overstuffed, best for a popcorn-night rewatch or a lazy Saturday with friends. Its pace is busy and jokey, with set pieces (a bank heist, a guillotine, a stormy sea chase) arriving one after another, and its emotional register stays light, with the main arc a grumpy, self-deprecating rogue reluctantly teaming up with two younger, more earnest allies. Action is frequent and cartoonish: sword fights, explosions, and ghostly menace, with some peril and skeletal horror imagery but no gore and little real cruelty. It is for fans of big, goofy adventure who want spectacle and light fantasy without anything bleak.
