The story
When their ship crash-lands on a remote planet, the marooned passengers soon learn that escaped convict Riddick isn't the only thing they have to fear. Deadly creatures lurk in the shadows, waiting to attack in the dark, and the planet is rapidly plunging into the utter blackness of a total eclipse. With the body count rising, the doomed survivors are forced to turn to Riddick with his eerie eyes to guide them through the darkness to safety. With time running out, there's only one rule: Stay in the light.
What it’s like
Harsh, sun-bleached daylight gives way to a long, creeping dark, and the film's look is built on that contrast: scorched desert wastes under a white sky, then night rendered in deep, muddy blacks where the only sources of light are flares, flashlights and the glint of creature eyes. The camera stays close and jittery during the attacks, cutting fast in the pitch-black sequences so the geography is lost on purpose, while calmer moments hold on wide, empty landscapes and the grim interior of a crashed ship. The sound design leans on skittering, clicking creatures, howls from the dark and a pounding, industrial score that surges in bursts and drops out for tense silences. The vibe is bleak, claustrophobic and survivalist, with a gritty creature-feature texture and a hardboiled sci-fi edge. It suits a late night alone with the lights off, or a loud, dark evening when you want to be kept on the edge of your seat. Violence is frequent and sharp, with bloody, graphic deaths, sudden gore and sustained dread, plus coarse language and some rough sexual references. Pacing is lean and relentless, and the arc follows an uneasy group of strangers who must trust a dangerous, unpredictable man. It is for viewers who want tense, nocturnal creature horror with a sci-fi shell.
