The story

Pokémon Blue is the third core series Pokémon game released as a minor revision of Pokémon Red and Green, which were released earlier that year. It was thus the first solitary version in the core series of Pokémon games. Various fixes in the game include a graphics and sound upgrade, as well as the removal of several known glitches that had been found in the original pair. Outside of Japan, its graphics, game engine and script formed the basis of Pokémon Red and Blue, while the wild Pokémon and game-exclusive Pokémon lists were changed to match Red and Green.

What it’s like

Chunky Game Boy pixels on a small greenish-grey screen, with tiny sprites set against pale tiled towns, dim cave interiors and lush route grass rendered in flat, saturated blocks of colour. The soundtrack is a looping set of chiptune melodies, bright and bouncy in the towns and tense in battle, with the familiar blips of menus and the rising jingle of a Pokémon levelling up. Its vibe is nostalgic and unhurried, a cozy adventure to dip into during a rainy afternoon, on a long car journey, or as a comfort replay before bed. Pacing is gentle and exploratory: walking through grass, catching creatures, and slowly building a team, with turn-based battles that are quick and strategic rather than frantic. The emotional register is wholesome and earnest, following a young trainer who grows from a beginner into a capable champion while forming bonds with a menagerie of monsters. Violence is cartoonish and bloodless, with Pokémon fainting rather than suffering, and there is no sexual content or real fear. It suits players who want something gentle and absorbing, and anyone who enjoys collecting, tinkering with team-building and low-stakes fantasy.
