The story

The Police Academy misfits travel to Miami Beach for Commandant Lassard to be honored with a prestigious lifetime award pending his retirement. Things take a turn when Lassard unknowingly ends up in possession of stolen diamonds from a jewel heist.

What it’s like

Bright, flat daylight and pastel hotel exteriors give this one the look of a late-80s postcard: sun-bleached Miami Beach streets, palm-lined boulevards, pool decks and tacky resort lobbies filmed in plain, evenly lit comedy coverage with little interest in shadow or texture. The camera stays conventional, mostly medium shots and wide group frames that keep the ensemble in view, and the score is a bouncy, synth-tinged brass-and-keys pop that leans into the sitcom rhythm. Its vibe is broad, cheerful silliness with a light caper edge, the kind of thing that suits a lazy weekend afternoon, a comfort rewatch, or background company while doing something with your hands. Pacing is brisk and episodic, built around set pieces and running gags rather than suspense, and the emotional register stays warm and good-natured, with a retiring commandant and his scrappy recruits tied together by affection. Intensity is low: slapstick scuffles, cartoonish chases and a few mild crude jokes, with no real gore and only faint menace from the jewel theft subplot. It is for people who want easygoing, unpretentious slapstick and a sense of familiar characters being silly together.
