The story

Sid Meier's Railroad Tycoon is a business simulation game. Railroad Tycoon was written by game designer Sid Meier and published by MicroProse Railroad Tycoon 2 is the only game of the series that was released fr the PSX console. You try to make it to the top of the transportation industry in Railroad Tycoon II, a simulation that takes you from a wannabe to a tycoon (if your lucky!).

What it’s like

Warm, unhurried calm, with the cheerful clatter of a steam age in motion. Railroad Tycoon II looks like a hand-painted map table come alive: soft pastel landscapes of rolling green farmland, sandy desert and snowy mountain passes, rendered in a flat, storybook palette, with tiny locomotives puffing smoke across the scene and cities that grow block by block as the player's network reaches them. The camera hovers above the map in a steady overhead view, and the music is a bright, period-flavoured orchestral score that loops gently under the sounds of whistles, clacking rails and station bells. Nothing is hurried; play moves at the speed of a timetable, so a session suits a quiet afternoon, a rainy evening with a cup of tea, or a low-pressure background game while listening to a podcast. Stakes are financial rather than violent: there is no combat or gore, only the tension of a loan, a tight budget and a rival's new line. The emotional register is satisfied patience, the pleasure of watching a small venture become an empire through careful planning. It is for people who enjoy slow, systematic building, historical atmosphere, and the quiet thrill of seeing a plan come together.
