The story

Randy Cunningham is an average high school freshman until he is chosen to become The Ninja. Now he must defend the downtrodden, save his fellow students and become hero to the good people of Norrisville.

What it’s like

Bright, saturated cartoon color on a suburban high school backdrop, with clean flat shading, quick-cut action, and exaggerated ninja poses that snap into freeze frames before the next blur of motion. Its sound is a bouncy, chiptune-flecked orchestral score, punctuated by sound effects that land like video-game hits and a heavy dose of rapid-fire, self-deprecating banter. The vibe is breezy, goofy and upbeat, the kind of after-school cartoon energy that suits a lazy weekend morning, a comfort rewatch, or a half-attentive afternoon with kids in the room. Pacing is brisk and episodic, with each short segment resolving its small mischief before the next one begins, and the emotional register stays light: Randy is a nervous, well-meaning freshman who gradually grows more confident while juggling school humiliation, friendships and a secret double life. The fights are cartoonish, with lots of flips, staff swings and comic defeats, and nothing gory or frightening, though villains occasionally menace in a mild, Saturday-morning way. It is for viewers who want gentle, funny action with a clear hero's arc, from kids and teens to adults who enjoy easy, uncomplicated animated comedy.
