Return to Monkey Island, the long-awaited follow-up to the legendary Secret of Monkey Island and Monkey Island 2: LeChuck's Revenge by Ron Gilbert's Terrible Toybox in collaboration with Devolver Digital and Lucasfilm Games, coming 2022.

What it’s like

Hand-painted, storybook-bright environments in saturated Caribbean blues, sunburnt yellows and deep greens, with a soft, slightly wobbly cel-shaded look that suits its cartoon-caricature cast. Scenes are composed like stage sets, with characters framed mid-gag against painted backdrops of harbours, jungle and sea-battered wood, and the camera mostly holds still while you click through them. The score is light and bouncy, built on sea-shanty fiddle, brass stabs and plucked strings, with ambient gulls, lapping water and tavern chatter filling the gaps. Pacing is unhurried and conversational, driven by puzzle-hunting, banter and long wandering through odd locations, with the occasional sharp gear-up for a set piece. Sword fights and pirate mischief are played for laughs, so violence is cartoonish and bloodless, and there is no sexual content and little real menace. It is a warm, witty, slightly nostalgic vibe, good for a relaxed evening with a controller or for a playful afternoon with a tricky puzzle, and for people who enjoy clever wordplay, gentle absurdity and a comfortable return to classic point-and-click adventure.
