The story

Return of the Tentacle: Prologue is a fan-made sequel to the classic LucasArts point and click adventure game Day of the Tentacle. The game takes place two years after the original. Purple Tentacle is back and again tries to conquer the world and enslave humanity. Bernard, Laverne, and Hoagie make their way back to the mansion of the mad scientist Dr. Fred and work on a plan to save the world – by time-traveling once more.

What it’s like

Bright, cartoonish hand-drawn backgrounds in saturated primary colours, with exaggerated character animation and wobbly, old-school slapstick energy. Rooms are crowded with gadgets, gears and oddball props, and the palette leans on purple and warm mansion browns. The soundtrack is jaunty and chiptune-tinged, with comic sound effects punctuating every click and pickup. The vibe is playful, goofy and affectionate, a comfort-game for a lazy afternoon or a short evening session when you want to laugh at a puzzle and not be stressed by it. Pacing is unhurried and driven by the player: you wander through rooms, poke at objects, and combine items in absurd ways, with a rhythm of small discoveries and punchline payoffs. The emotional register is light and nostalgic, following a trio of friends who are reunited and back to their old scheming. Intensity is very low: mild cartoon peril, comic menace from the villain, and no gore, sexual content or real fear. It suits fans of classic LucasArts adventures, anyone who wants a gentle, witty puzzler, and players who enjoy sly, silly humour over challenge.
