The story

Toonstruck is an adventure game released in 1996 in which, although all the imagery is drawn and scanned into the game, the protagonist Drew Blanc (played and voiced by Christopher Lloyd) is an actual video-captured representation of the actor (the name is a pun, since the character has "drawn a blank" on coming up with a new idea for a character). Drew's sidekick, crudely named Flux Wildly, is a drawn character voiced by Dan Castellaneta. Toonstruck also features scan-line compressed FMV and was also one of the first video games to include stock music from APM Music, notably the classic "Spooky Scherzo" by Sam Fonteyn and "Lonely Hearts Club A" by David Bell.

What it’s like

Bright, hand-drawn cartoon worlds collide with grainy live-action video in this 1996 point-and-click adventure, where a live-captured Christopher Lloyd, all rubbery expressions and nervous energy, wanders through lushly painted, scanned-in backdrops of animal-filled cities and sun-warmed toon landscapes. The palette runs to saturated primaries and pastel skies, with slapstick physics and exaggerated character design throughout, and the scanned-video cutscenes give it a playfully scrappy, collage-like texture. Sound leans on a stock-music patchwork of jaunty, wry tracks, bouncy rather than moody, with plenty of wisecracking voice work. The pacing is leisurely and puzzle-driven, the mood warm and gently absurd, a cheerful jumble of cartoon mischief and self-aware humour. It suits a lazy afternoon of clicking through odd rooms, or a nostalgic evening with a comfort-game itch. The intensity is low: mild slapstick peril, no gore, no real violence, and nothing frightening. It is for people who love old-school adventure games, cartoon whimsy and quirky, meta-comic characters.
