The story

Rhythm Heaven puts the music in your hands and some rhythm in your life. Let the music move you as you tap and slide your stylus on the touch screen to the beat of more than 50 musical rhythm games. The controls are as natural as tapping your finger to music.

What it’s like

Bright, flat-colour cartoon art on the DS's two screens: chunky hand-drawn characters, pastel and primary backdrops, and the bouncing rhythm cues that sit in a clean, uncluttered layout where nothing competes for attention. The sound is the centre of it all, with each short game built around a quirky looped tune of bells, marimba, handclaps, horns and clipped synth, often playing with a deadpan, slightly absurd sense of humour. Its vibe is playful, cheerful and light, the kind of game that suits a rainy afternoon on the sofa, a short commute, or passing time with a friend who wants to pass the stylus back and forth. Pacing comes in brief, self-contained bursts of a minute or so, so it never demands long sessions, and the emotional register stays warm and gently silly throughout. Intensity is very low: no violence, no gore, no fear, just mild comic mishaps when a beat is missed. It suits children, families, and adults who want a relaxed, joyful rhythm game that rewards a good ear and a steady tap.
