The story

After a successful deployment of the RoboCop Law Enforcement unit, OCP sees its goal of urban pacification come closer and closer, but as this develops, a new narcotic known as "Nuke" invades the streets led by God-delirious leader Cane. As this menace grows, it may prove to be too much for Murphy to handle. OCP tries to replicate the success of the first unit, but ends up with failed prototypes with suicidal issues... until Dr. Faxx, a scientist straying away from OCP's path, uses Cane as the new subject for the RoboCop 2 project, a living God.

What it’s like

Grimy, saturated Detroit nights in RoboCop 2 run on sickly neon, sodium-orange streetlight, and the cold blue-white glow of corporate offices, with Kershner's camera lingering on wide, cluttered city blocks and the bleak industrial sprawl around them. The look is gritty 1990 practical-effects sci-fi: visible seams on the suits, sweaty faces, smoky interiors, and gore that arrives in sudden, wet, squelchy bursts rather than lingering. Sound leans on a clanking, mechanical score, synth stingers, and the hiss and whir of Murphy's servos, with dialogue delivered deadpan against the chaos. The vibe is bleakly absurd and satirical, a corporate-dystopia lark with a hard-edged, drug-soaked undercurrent, and it suits a late-night watch with a sense of humour about its own excess. Pacing is brisk, the register alternates between jokey and grim, and the arcs follow a battered cop wrestling with what is left of his humanity and a pathetic, zealous villain spiralling into messianic delusion. Violence is frequent and graphic, with shootings, gruesome deaths, drug-fuelled cruelty, and some sexual innuendo; it is not gentle. It is for viewers who like dark satire, practical-effects mayhem, and cyberpunk with a cynical edge.
