The story

The witch and her cat couldn't be happier, flying through the sky on their broomstick -- until the witch drops her hat, then her bow, then her wand! Luckily, three helpful animals find the missing items and all they want in return is a ride on the broomstick. But is there room on the broom for so many new friends? And when disaster strikes, will they be able to save the witch from the clutches of a hungry dragon? From the acclaimed creators of The Gruffalo, this enchanting story of quick wits and friendship is full of humor and adventure -- and just the right amount of spookiness. - Publisher.

What it’s like

Bright, bouncy rhyme that rolls off the tongue, with a gentle rhythm built for reading aloud at bedtime or on a lazy afternoon. The picture-book world is airy and cheerful: a witch, her cat and a widening crew of animal friends sail across wide open skies, against soft pastel-toned illustrations of woods, rivers and a dark, misty marsh where the spookiness gathers. The mood is playful and warm, with a light autumnal chill rather than real fright, the kind of cozy, Halloween-adjacent feel that suits a rainy Sunday on the sofa or a quick story before nap time. Pacing is brisk and cumulative, each page adding another helper and another item to the tally, so small children can join in on the repeated rhymes. The emotional register is kind and generous, following a solitary witch who learns that making room for others is worth the squeeze. Intensity is very low: a dragon looms and there is a moment of peril, but it resolves quickly with no violence, gore or cruelty. Made for young children, parents reading aloud, and anyone wanting something gentle, funny and whimsical.
