The story
She's cared for her siblings as best she could . . . but is it enough? Instead of the new life she and her family expected to forge out west, seventeen-year-old Angela is thrust into the role of caring for her three younger siblings after the death of their parents. With the help of her older brother, and trust in God, Angela is determined to raise the children as her mother would have wanted. As the youngsters grow, the questions and challenges intensify. Angela feels trapped and overwhelmed. Surely no man will ever want a woman who comes with three children in tow. Is this the plan God has for her life? Will she ever find a way to balance her own dreams with the promises she made to her mama?
What it’s like
Quiet prairie days rendered in plain, unhurried prose: wide open skies, sod and timber homesteads, wood smoke, bread rising in a cold kitchen, the creak of a wagon and the lowing of cattle carried across grassland. Oke's voice is gentle and domestic, close to its heroine's thoughts, with scenes of cooking, mending, schoolroom lessons and evening prayers that move at the steady pace of a homestead year. The vibe is tender and wholesome, with an undertow of worry and loss that stays warm rather than bleak: a comfort read for a rainy afternoon, a bedtime chapter, or a slow weekend with a mug of tea. Its arc follows a young woman who shoulders responsibility for three younger siblings, measuring her own longings against the promises she made, and slowly learning to trust that her future is not closed. Intensity is very low: grief after parents' deaths and some hardship, but no violence, gore or sexual content, and no real fear beyond everyday peril. Written for readers who want clean, faith-centred historical fiction, sibling devotion, and the consolation of a family pulling together through hard times.
