The story

After a year of teaching in a one-room schoolhouse on the western frontier, Elizabeth plans her wedding to Wynn Delaney, a member of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police. As they begin their new life together at his isolated outpost in the far north, Elizabeth is unprepared for the loneliness she feels and the rigors of life without any of the conveniences she's accustomed to. Her deep love for Wynn and her faith in God seem like all she has. But will that be enough?

What it’s like

Quiet prairie-and-northern frontier, told in plain, earnest prose that lingers on small domestic detail: lamplight on a cabin table, the sting of cold on a wooden floor, long stretches of wind and snow pressing against isolated walls. The voice is gentle and devotional, with an unhurried rhythm that moves from wedding preparations to the slow, hard adjustment of a newly married woman far from town. Its mood is wistful and tender, a warm-hearted calm with a thread of homesickness running under it, the kind of book that suits a rainy Sunday, a cup of tea, or a comfort reread. Violence is absent and any danger stays offstage; the romance is chaste, and sexual content is none. Faith is woven into the characters' inner lives, so their prayers and trust in God are part of the emotional texture. Written for readers who want a clean, sincere love story set against a sparse, snowbound landscape, with the pleasures of historical texture and steady, hopeful character growth.
