The story
Rough Around The Edges A hard eyed man, Flint Mahone came back from the War Between the States with only one tender feeling left - for the missing children of his dead brother. So when the three little ones showed up on his doorstep with a fierce Wyoming winter in the offing, he knew he would do whatever it took to make them a home. Soft At Heart Lauren Hart had been raised among outlaws, taught to gamble to make her way in the world, but she wanted nothing more than to lead a decent life, to meet other girls her age, to own a pretty dress. One glance told her Flint Mahone was trouble, a ladies' man who knew all the right moves and none of the right emotions. Love was as foreign to him as marriage, but Lauren couldn't resist his plea for help. And when she saw the gentle way he held his little niece, she knew there was hope yet of reaching the warm, caring man beneath the wild, carousing cowboy.
What it’s like
Hard winter light on open Wyoming country, with the interiors of a frontier cabin lit by lamp and hearth fire, the kind of slow, domestic historical romance that rewards a quiet afternoon with a blanket and a mug of something hot. Norah Hess writes in a plain, unhurried voice that lingers on chores, weather, and the small rituals of a household being built from scratch: stoves fed, children fed, a dress sewn or dreamed of. The vibe is tender and wistful, a warm-hearted comfort read with a bit of frontier grit at its edges. Its emotional arc follows a wounded, guarded war veteran slowly softening around three orphaned children, and a gambler's daughter who sees past his reputation as a rake. Pacing is steady and conversational, with romance building through glances, shared work, and gradual trust rather than action. Intensity is low: the period hardness of the era and the memory of war surface in conversation, but there is no graphic violence, gore, or explicit sexual content, and the romance stays chaste and sweet. It suits readers who want a gentle, low-stakes frontier romance with a redemptive hero and a warm family at its center.
