The story

SWEET CHARITY Stranded on the Western frontier, Lacey Stewart suddenly had to depend on the kindness of strangers. And no one showed her more generosity than the rancher who offered to marry her. But shortly after Trey Saunders and Lacey were pronounced husband and wife, he was off to a cattle drive -- and another woman's bed. Shocked to discover that the dashing groom wanted her to be a pawn in a vicious game of revenge, the young firebrand refused to obey her vows. Only when Trey proved that he loved, honored, and cherished his blushing bride would Lacey forsake all others and unite with him in wedded bliss.

What it’s like

Wide, sun-bleached prairie and dusty ranch yards, with heat shimmer, open skies, campfire dark and the creak of wagons, all rendered in a brisk, old-fashioned romance voice that moves quickly between sparring dialogue and heated private moments. The mood runs from prickly and combative to slowly tender, a feisty heroine who won't be managed and a hard-edged rancher who has to earn her trust. It suits a weekend escape with a warm drink, a long-haul flight, or a comfort read when you want the classic bodice-ripper pleasures of defiance and eventual surrender. Intensity is moderate in its violence, with rough frontier hardship and a few tense confrontations, but the sexual content is explicit and central, with frequent sensual scenes that carry the emotional arc. The emotional register is swoony and dramatic, built on wounded pride and the gradual reshaping of a marriage that started as a bargain. It is for readers who enjoy historical western romance with a strong-willed heroine, a brooding alpha hero, and steamy, unapologetically sensual storytelling.
