The story

Tatort is a long-running German/Austrian/Swiss, crime television series set in various parts of these countries. The show is broadcast on the channels of ARD in Germany, ORF in Austria and SF1 in Switzerland.

What it’s like

Unhurried, sober procedural texture: wide establishing shots of ordinary German and Austrian streets, municipal offices and cramped interiors under overhead fixtures or daylight through net curtains, with a plainly observational camera that holds on faces during questioning rather than cutting for effect. The feel is dry, grounded and a little cool, more about routine, paperwork and conversation than spectacle. Vibe: quiet, methodical, faintly melancholic. It suits a grey weekend afternoon, a Sunday evening after dinner, or a slow background watch while tidying up. Pacing is deliberate, with long stretches of interviews, travel between locations and talk, and tension that builds through patience rather than shocks. Its people are working detectives, practical and often weary, whose arcs unfold through procedure and small personal details rather than dramatic reinvention. Intensity is moderate: a killing sits at the centre and is shown briefly or off-screen, with some menace and interrogation pressure, but no gore and little graphic violence. It is for viewers who enjoy classic police procedurals, period atmosphere, and the slow satisfaction of an investigation assembling itself piece by piece.
