The story
Stranded on an isolated desert road, two life-long friends fight for survival as their already strained relationship spirals into knife-wielding madness.
What it’s like
Sun-bleached and dusty, Scenic Route runs on hard desert light: wide, washed-out daytime exteriors of empty highway, scrub, and heat shimmer, with the car interiors cramped and claustrophobic. The palette leans on bleached tans and faded blues, the sort of colourless glare that makes every stretch of road feel endless. Camera work stays close and restless once the trouble starts, handheld in small rooms and roadside gullies, while the score is sparse, with dry synth pulses and long stretches of wind and engine noise doing most of the work. The vibe is sun-scorched unease, a mix of bitter comedy and mounting menace that tips toward dread. Two old friends bicker, drift and then turn on each other in rising, escalating cycles, and the pacing builds steadily from banter to panic. Violence is frequent and sharp: fights, knife attacks and blood on screen, with some graphic and disturbing moments, but no gore for its own sake. It suits a late-summer evening with the lights off, for viewers who want a tense, nasty two-hander and can handle abrasive, unpleasant characters.
