The story

Fred, Daphne, Velma, Shaggy, and the talking dog, Scooby-Doo, travel on the Mystery Machine van, in search of weird mysteries to solve.

What it’s like

Bright, flat limited-animation colour with hand-inked outlines, the kind of cartoon look that is easy on the eye and never asks much of it. Night scenes fall into deep blue and violet, with moonlit graveyards, creaking mansions and fog-drifted roads that feel more eerie than frightening, and the Mystery Machine van rolling through them gives the whole thing a loose, road-trip cheer. Sound does a lot of the work: a jaunty, jazzy theme, ticking organ stings and ghostly wails, with the sudden yelp of a scared dog and the rattle of a chain landing the jokes. Pacing is brisk and episodic, roughly twenty-odd minutes of a case set up, a chase through corridors and a masked villain unmasked, so it suits a lazy Saturday morning, a comfort rewatch, or something to half-watch while tidying up. The register is light and silly rather than scary: cheerful friendship, bickering affection and running gags, with ghosts that turn out to be people in costumes. Gentle throughout, with cartoon slapstick and mild peril but no real violence, gore or cruelty. Made for children and for adults who want nostalgic, low-stakes mystery with a warm, goofy heart.
