The story

Sherlock Holmes uses his abilities to take on cases by private clients and those that the Scotland Yard are unable to solve, along with his friend Dr. Watson.

What it’s like

Gaslit Victorian interiors in deep amber and brown: dark wood panelling, patterned wallpaper, lamplight pooling on cluttered desks, and fog-grey London streets seen through rain-streaked windows. The camera stays measured and formal, with careful framing, slow pans across rooms and frequent close attention to hands, documents and faces, so the solving feels like watching someone read a room. Scored with restrained strings and piano that drop out for long stretches of quiet, the mood is intelligent, unhurried and faintly melancholy, with a clockwork precision in the editing. Each episode runs at its own steady pace, building through conversation and deduction rather than chase or spectacle, and the friendship between the sharp, restless detective and his steady companion gives the whole thing a warm, bookish comfort. Violence is occasional and mostly offscreen or brief, with murder and its aftermath handled as puzzles rather than gore; there is some menace and dark Victorian grimness, but no sustained gruesomeness. Well suited to a rainy Sunday, an evening of quiet attention, or anyone who loves period detective stories where the pleasure is in the reasoning and the atmosphere.
