The story

Mika is a fresh high school student who starts texting a mysterious boy. She is shocked when he reveals who he is - Hiro, a delinquent attending her school. What she doesn't know is that Hiro isn't as bad as he seems.

What it’s like

Bright, everyday school-life daylight and the soft glow of a phone screen set the tone, with the story moving between ordinary classrooms, hallways and the outside world of a Japanese high school. The mood is sweet and earnest, a little wistful, with the restless ache of first attraction at its centre. Its pacing is unhurried, leaning on quiet exchanges and small gestures rather than big set pieces, and the emotional register stays tender and youthful. The main arc follows two teenagers who start out misreading each other and slowly come to see past their first impressions. Intensity is low: some teen rebellion and rough talk, a few tense confrontations, but no graphic violence and little that is sexual. It suits a lazy afternoon, a comfort watch, or anyone wanting a gentle, romantic story about growing up. Fans of Japanese youth romance and school-set love stories will find it familiar and warm.
