The story

An enduring love story in 1987 Seoul; Young-ro, a female university student, treats the bleeding Soo-ho, a student attending a prestigious university, who one day jumps into a women's university dormitory despite the dangerous situation.

What it’s like

Snowdrop, the 2021 Korean series created by Yoo Hyun-mi, is set in 1987 Seoul, where a student uprising against military rule collides with a secret romance. Its rhythm moves between tender, slow-burning intimacy and jolting political danger, with tense sequences of pursuit and interrogation cutting into quieter scenes of shared meals and stolen glances. The mood is wistful and sometimes claustrophobic, colored by the grey-brown textures of a dormitory, a city under curfew, and a country on the edge of change. Its central arc follows a idealistic young woman and a wounded, guarded man who must decide what loyalty costs when love and conviction pull them apart, a shape that grows from innocence toward hard-won resolve. Tonal shifts are constant: romantic warmth gives way to dread, and earnest student idealism sits beside the quiet horror of state surveillance. Craft leans on melancholy piano and period-appropriate music, soft lighting in intimate scenes, and handheld urgency during protests. Memorable moments tend to be sudden bursts of violence against gentle romantic stillness, and small gestures carrying enormous weight. It suits viewers who want a romance that is inseparable from history, and who enjoy sorrow braided with hope.
