The story

Set out on an adventure amid floating islands and witness a world brought to life by renowned designers and animators. Battle robot enemies, build your strength and undertake quests as you journey through the Shepherd Republic and meet fascinating characters. Take control of Red as he's drawn into an epic tale and becomes responsible for the fate of the world. Compete with friends who own Solatorobo in all-action races round circuits floating in the sky.

What it’s like

Bright hand-drawn anime art on the Nintendo DS, with lush painted skies, sun-warmed floating islands and cloud-banked horizons that make every flight feel open and airy. The palette runs to sunset oranges, sea blues and soft pastel towns, and the character sprites are expressive and chunky, with an animated, storybook charm. Music leans on bouncy, orchestral adventure themes that swell during airship sequences and soften into gentle pads in quieter village scenes. Sitting with it feels like a warm afternoon with a picture-book adventure: travel by airship, chat with a colourful cast of animal-like characters, and tackle turn-free action battles against robot foes that are more brisk than brutal. The pace is unhurried and exploratory, with side quests and town visits between bursts of combat, and the emotional register stays hopeful and boyishly earnest as a young hero grows into a responsibility bigger than he expected. Violence is cartoonish and bloodless, with robots exploding in sparks and no gore, and the tension stays light. It suits a cozy evening with the handheld, a long train ride, or a relaxed playthrough for people who want a generous, friendly fantasy with a touch of mechanical grit and sky-high wonder.
