The story

A tough police sergeant's mother comes to visit him, and promptly starts trying to fix up his life, much to his embarrassment. For his birthday she buys him a machine gun out of the back of a van, and begins to further interfere with his job and love life, eventually helping him with a case he's on.

What it’s like

Bright, flat Los Angeles daylight on sun-bleached streets, with the wide, cheerful compositions of a 1990s studio comedy: suburban kitchens, a crowded police squad room, and a stretch of city where gunfire is staged with big, clean, almost cartoonish set pieces. The sound is a bouncy orchestral comedy score that keeps shifting into brassy action cues, punctuated by loud gunshots and car crashes. Its vibe is brisk, goofy and warm, a rough-and-tumble family sitcom wearing a cop-movie jacket. It suits a lazy weekend afternoon, a light comfort rewatch, or something easy to half-watch while folding laundry. The pacing is quick and broad, and the emotional register stays playful: a gruff, lonely cop slowly softens as his overbearing, sharp-tongued mother tries to rearrange his life and ends up helping him with a case. Violence is frequent but cartoonish, with plenty of gunfire, shootouts and explosions, and little blood or lingering cruelty. It is aimed at people who want action with a laugh, and an ideal fit for fans of mother-son comedy and buddy-cop lightness.
