The story

When a young rape victim takes justice into her own hands and becomes a serial killer, it's up to Dirty Harry Callahan, on suspension from the SFPD, to bring her to justice.

What it’s like

Gritty 1980s San Francisco rendered in flat daylight and sodium-orange night, with the grime of backstreets, rain-slick asphalt, and the garish glow of a seaside carnival sitting alongside its quieter, shabby interiors. Camera work is workmanlike and direct, with long takes of Eastwood's weathered face framed against plain walls and a synth-tinged score that pulses under the tension. The mood is hard-edged and grim, a revenge thriller where dread and brutality hang over the story. Violence is frequent and sometimes graphic: an opening sexual assault and its aftermath, gunfire, a car fire, and several killings, all handled with unsentimental directness rather than gore for its own sake, though the sexual violence is sustained and disturbing. Pacing is steady, with a hard-boiled, procedural rhythm and bursts of action. Emotionally it is bleak and cynical, following a traumatized woman's descent into vengeance and a weary cop's grudging pursuit. Suited to a late night for fans of gritty 80s crime cinema and Eastwood's Dirty Harry series; not for anyone seeking gentleness or a light watch.
