The story

While caring for her brother along with her audacious mother, a teenager strikes up an unlikely friendship with an eccentric activist who is protesting one of the most landmark medical cases of all time.

What it’s like

Hot, bright Florida daylight and washed-out pastel suburban interiors, with hospital corridors that hum under fluorescent light and camp chairs and handmade signs baking in the midday sun outside. The camera stays close and unhurried, favoring intimate medium shots and quiet pauses over flourish, and the sound leans on ordinary room tone, car rides, and the sharp, funny rhythms of family talk. The vibe is wry, tender grief: sad moments often land with a laugh, and the laughter never quite lets the sorrow go. Pacing is conversational and loose, with long stretches of waiting that give the characters room to be awkward, stubborn, and kind to one another. The emotional arc follows a teenage girl who learns to see her difficult, exhausting family more clearly and to let an unlikely friendship open her up, while the illness at the story's center stays unsparing. Intensity is low on physical violence and gore, with no graphic medical horror, but illness, death, and emotional distress are central and heavy, and some language is strong. It suits a rainy weekend, a quiet evening for a good cry, or anyone who wants a funny, honest film about grief, family, and growing up. It is for viewers who appreciate character-driven drama with dark humor and no easy answers.
