The story

Gypsy Blanchard struggles to deal with the toxic relationship with her overprotective mother, but her attempts to free herself lead to murder.

What it’s like

Pastel domestic spaces turn faintly sickly here: a Missouri house crowded with pink bedrooms, stuffed animals and warm kitchen light, set against the flat fluorescent glare of courtrooms and interview rooms. The palette is muted and washed out, the camera stays close and watchful, and it often holds on faces through long, uneasy pauses over a sparse, tense score. Based on a true crime case, it moves in measured episodes that build dread rather than shock, its drama driven by a suffocating mother-daughter bond and the slow unraveling of what is real. Intensity: child medical abuse, emotional manipulation and coercion, and one violent killing, with dread far more than gore, though scenes of illness and distress are hard to sit through. It suits a tense late-night watch, or viewers drawn to true crime and courtroom stories who want something dark, unsettling and carefully performed, anchored by Patricia Arquette's controlled, chilling turn.
