The story

For Peter Parker, life is busy. Between taking out the bad guys as Spider-Man and spending time with the person he loves, Gwen Stacy, high school graduation cannot come quickly enough. Peter has not forgotten about the promise he made to Gwen’s father to protect her by staying away, but that is a promise he cannot keep. Things will change for Peter when a new villain, Electro, emerges, an old friend, Harry Osborn, returns, and Peter uncovers new clues about his past.

What it’s like

Bright, saturated New York in daylight and at night, where the city glitters in sodium orange and electric blue, and Times Square-style billboards throw colour across wet asphalt during the big set pieces. Director Marc Webb frames the swinging sequences with wide, kinetic camera moves that loop around skyscrapers, while the quieter scenes between Peter and Gwen lean on warm interior light, sunlit classrooms, and tight two-shots that feel intimate and a little restless. The score is full and orchestral, with bright brass and a driving pulse during action, and it softens to piano when the characters talk. The vibe is buoyant and romantic with a current of anxiety underneath: a comic-book sheen layered over a story about promises, guilt, and a secret life pulling against ordinary affection. Pacing is brisk, with long stretches of banter and dates broken up by spectacle, and the emotional arc follows a young man trying to keep the people he loves at a safe distance while failing to do so. Violence is frequent and stylised, with electrical blasts, falls, and fight scenes that are loud and cartoonishly kinetic rather than gory; there is some peril and emotional grief, but nothing graphic. It suits a weekend afternoon, a fun comfort rewatch, or a lighter night in for viewers who want comic-book energy, sparkling city views, and a love story with stakes but no real horror.
