The story
Gabriel, an ordinary boy who has just moved from London to the countryside, is bored and misses the friends he left behind. He gazed out the window, as if wanting to escape from it all... until something strange caught his attention: mysterious smoke rising from the woods near his house. As he follows it to investigate, his world becomes intertwined with the hidden world of mages.
What it’s like
Soft, painterly backgrounds of misty green woods and pastel English countryside, with warm lamplight in cosy interiors and the faint smoke of something magical drifting through the trees. The palette stays gentle and earthy, the camera lingers on quiet domestic moments, and the score is light and wistful, with the occasional swell when the strange world opens up. The vibe is wistful wonder with a thread of unease, the kind of thing that suits a rainy afternoon, a slow evening alone, or a comfort watch when you want to feel the pull of a hidden world without much dread. The pacing is unhurried, with a homesick boy's curiosity gradually replacing his boredom. Violence is minimal and brief, mostly creature menace and mild peril, with no gore and little that disturbs. It is for viewers who enjoy fantasy with a coming-of-age heart, folklore atmosphere, and a sense of friendship and belonging.
