The story

A romantic getaway for two troubled college sweethearts turns into a struggle for survival when unexpected guests – and the surrounding environment – exhibit signs of a mysterious infection.

What it’s like

Fog-swallowed dunes, a grey-blue sea, and a weathered clapboard house under a low sky give this film a damp, sun-starved look, with long unhurried shots of empty beach and rooms lit by lamplight or thin daylight through the windows. The sound is mostly waves, wind and a low, uneasy drone that rises when something is wrong, and the pacing is slow and deliberate, building a creeping sense of unease before the horror breaks through. It moves through mounting bewilderment and bodily dread toward something bleak and unresolved. The intensity is considerable: sickness and vomiting are shown plainly, with body horror and some gore that lands with real discomfort, though it is restrained rather than relentless. Its main relationship is a strained young couple, and the tension between them shapes the story as much as the threat does. It suits a night alone with the lights low, for viewers who enjoy slow-burn, atmospheric horror with a strange, clammy mood and a lingering ending, and it is not a fit for anyone seeking something gentle.
