The story

Two women, one American and one British, swap homes at Christmastime following bad breakups. Each woman finds romance with a local man but realizes that the imminent return home may end the relationship.

What it’s like

Warm, golden, and cosy: sun-washed Los Angeles canyon villas and gloomy-then-glowing English cottages, shot in Nancy Meyers' polished, comfortable style with wide establishing shots, bright kitchens, roaring fireplaces and frosted village lanes. Camera work is steady and unhurried, with long two-shots over dinner tables and gentle push-ins on faces, and the palette swings from sunny yellows and pastels to rain-blurred Surrey greens and Christmas-lit amber. The score is light and string-led, with a few well-chosen pop songs threaded through, and the overall vibe is breezy, wistful romance with a comfort-food heart. It suits a rainy Sunday, a relaxed holiday-season rewatch, or a lazy evening with a glass of wine. The pace is easy and episodic, moving between two storylines that gradually open up two lonely people, each learning to trust again, so the emotional register stays warm and hopeful with light tears and gentle laughter. Intensity is very low: a few mild sexual references and some crying, with no violence and no real menace. It is for people who want a romantic, feel-good escape with grown-up characters and a sense of place.
