The story

The Legend of Heroes: Trails from Zero is the fourth installment in the main Trails series, serving as a direct sequel to the events of the Liberl arc and the beginning to the Crossbell arc. The game follows Lloyd Bannings and his colleagues Elie MacDowell, Randy Orlando, and Tio Plato. The four form the Special Support Section, a newly formed department of the Crossbell police in a city-state located between two great powers fighting for control over it.

What it’s like

Bright anime key art gives way to a grounded, lived-in look: a walled city-state of stone plazas, tram lines, cafés and cluttered police offices, with warm daylight and soft lamplight in the evenings and a clean, painterly 2D-anime finish on the character portraits. The soundtrack leans on jaunty orchestral and synth-tinged themes that loop comfortably under town exploration, while the cutscene voice work carries most of the emotional weight. Turn-based battles are brisk and colourful, with flashy special moves that feel satisfying in the hands. The vibe is warm, earnest and quietly wistful, with a lot of cosy downtime between investigations, and it suits long evening sessions, a comfort replay, or a steady weekend play where you can settle in with a cup of tea. Pacing is leisurely and dialogue-heavy, with the four colleagues' banter and gradual trust-building forming the emotional spine: a group of outsiders slowly becoming a family. Violence is stylised and fairly restrained, with fights against crime and militia rather than gore; there is some peril and tension but nothing graphic. Made for players who love character-driven JRPGs, political intrigue on a small scale, and sincere, long-form storytelling.
