The story

Tales of Symphonia Chronicles is a compilation release of Tales of Symphonia and Tales of Symphonia: Dawn of the New World HD remasters with additional content.

What it’s like

Bright, saturated fantasy painted in soft anime colour: sunlit meadows, lantern-lit towns, and sweeping skies rendered in cel-shaded 3D, with 2D character portraits that flash up in dialogue. The orchestral score by Motoi Sakuraba is lush and melodic, swelling into bright battle themes and dropping to gentle piano in quieter scenes. Combat is real-time and fast, with combos that snap and flow across an action-heavy party, and the HD remaster sharpens the resolution while keeping the original's warm, slightly dated charm. Its vibe is earnest, sunny adventure with a melancholy undertow, best suited to a long weekend session, a comfort replay, or an evening of steady progress with something playing quietly in the background. The pace is brisk, with frequent skirmishes between longer, talky stretches that let its young cast's friendships and rivalries develop. The mood is hopeful but not naive: a teenage hero slowly growing into responsibility, with themes of prejudice, betrayal, and revenge running beneath the cheerful surface. Violence is frequent but stylised and bloodless, with fantasy battles and character deaths that land with emotional weight rather than gore, and there is no sexual content. It suits fans of classic JRPGs who want heartfelt, colourful adventure with a moderate, mostly cartoonish edge.
