The story

Tales of Destiny 2 is a direct sequel to the Playstation's Tales of Destiny. The game's battle system retains the same fluid, fast-paced action combat of its predecessor Tales of Eternia, but adds a range of experimental features including a stamina gauge and a fairly high level of character, equipment, and skill customisation.

What it’s like

Bright anime-styled character art over painted fantasy backdrops: sun-washed meadows, stone towns with lanterns, and dungeons lit in cold blue and ember orange, with the 2D sprites and cel-shaded figures sitting on pre-rendered environments. The sound is a lively mix of orchestral fantasy cues and guitar-driven rock that kicks in during fights, with characters chattering through the action in bright, teasing banter. Combat is fast and fluid in real time, with characters swapping on the fly, and the feel in the hands is busy and satisfying, a steady stream of hits, combos and stamina gauges to manage. Vibe: energetic, cheerful adventure with a bittersweet undertow and plenty of flashing spells and explosions. It suits an evening of leveling up, shopping and grinding between story beats, or a long stretch of play with a weekend's worth of momentum. Intensity is moderate: frequent stylised battle violence with bursts of spell effects and explosions, no gore, and some sharp emotional moments. Pacing is brisk in fights and leisurely between them. Its people are a band of mismatched young heroes, with a sharp female antagonist and friendships that slowly deepen. For fans of anime JRPGs who want customisable, action-driven combat and lively party chatter.
