The story

The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask 3D is a remake of the original Nintendo 64 game with more up-to-date graphics, streamlined UI and different additional game modes. Most textures are significantly more detailed, and many models are more faithful to the game's concept and promotional art. In addition, the frame rate has been increased to 30 FPS compared to the original's 20 FPS.

What it’s like

Warm, painterly watercolour-leaning textures give the world of Termina a soft, unhurried glow, with the 3DS's stereoscopic depth making towns, forests and the moon's shadowed face feel layered and close enough to lean into. Dusk and night are the emotional centre: the sky bruises into amber and violet, lanterns pool light on cobbled lanes, and the moon hangs over everything with a looming, ominous calm. The soundtrack is its own atmosphere, with the ocarina melodies and ambient town chatter falling into sparse, wistful loops that repeat like a clock ticking down. The pace is deliberate and cyclical, built around three-day loops that reward slowing down, wandering, and noticing small domestic details in the lives of townspeople. The tone is melancholy but gentle, a bittersweet ache about endings, grief and second chances rather than dread. Combat is mild and cartoonish, with enemies and bosses giving only brief, low-blood skirmishes and no gore. It suits a rainy evening alone, a long commute on a handheld, or anyone who wants a contemplative puzzle adventure with a wistful, quietly emotional undertow.
