The story

Xenoblade Chronicles 3D is a port of the well-received Xenoblade Chronicles for Wii. The new version offers 3D visuals and allows players to view the maps and character stats on the bottom screen. An additional bonus mode lets players view 3D models of the characters and listen to music tracks from the game.

What it’s like

Vast, sun-washed landscapes stretch to the horizon, with rolling grassland, towering alien flora and a sky that shifts from pale dawn to deep violet, all rendered in soft, slightly painterly colour. The stereoscopic 3D gives depth to rocky cliffs and the giant bodies of ancient titans, while the bottom screen keeps maps and stats in a clean, unobtrusive layer. The score is sweeping orchestral music that swells over open plains and drops to gentle, reflective piano in quieter villages, and the combat sounds are crisp and rhythmic. The vibe is wonder-tinged and contemplative, with a steady, unhurried rhythm punctuated by fast, strategic battles. Its characters move through long arcs of friendship, loss and quiet resolve, and the tone stays earnest and hopeful. Violence is stylised and fantasy-scale, with monsters falling in bursts of light rather than gore, and some tragic moments land with emotional weight. It suits a long evening exploring alone, or a patient player who enjoys deep, sprawling worlds and turn-free real-time tactics, and fans of the original Wii release will find a familiar, portable version of it.
