The story

The Legend of Zelda: Oracle of Seasons is one of two Zelda titles released for the Game Boy Color, the other being Oracle of Ages. The game retain many gameplay elements from Link's Awakening such as the graphics, audio and top-view perspective. It also features eight dungeons and a large overworld to explore like in the previous games. Oracle of Seasons is said to be more action-oriented than its counterpart being more puzzle-oriented. After completing one of the two games, both can be linked to form a single linear plot with an alternate ending. Oracle of Seasons and Oracle of Ages were often credited as being two of the top games for the Game Boy Color.

What it’s like

Bright, chunky pixel sprites on a small handheld screen, with a top-down view that makes the overworld feel like a tidy diorama. The palette shifts with the seasons: blossom pinks and fresh greens in spring, saturated summer meadows, rust and amber leaves in autumn, and pale, quiet snowfields in winter, so revisiting the same map feels like watching a place breathe. The chiptune score is bouncy and familiar, with the soft, rounded tones of the Game Boy Color. The rhythm is brisk and action-forward: short bursts of sword-swinging, enemy rooms, and dungeons that send you back and forth across a large, cheerful world, with occasional spooky detours among the undead and witches. The tone is lighthearted and adventurous, with a warm fairy-tale quality. Violence is cartoonish and bloodless, with monsters that fizzle into puffs, and deaths are brief and softened by the game's gentle presentation. It suits a relaxed evening with a handheld, or anyone who likes puzzle-solving and exploration with a steady pulse of action and a comforting, storybook sense of place.
