The story

The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker HD is a remaster of The Wind Waker with an alternate recreation of the original's art style, several gameplay adjustments, a new lighting engine and higher resolution textures.

What it’s like

Bright, saturated cel-shaded colour does most of the work here: sun-warmed greens, cerulean seas and sherbet skies, with characters drawn in bold outlines and expressive, exaggerated faces. The HD remaster sharpens the lighting so water glitters and sunlight pools across wooden decks and sandy beaches, while the sea itself stretches out in long, open vistas that feel roomy rather than empty. The soundscape is gentle and melodic, with wind, gulls and lapping waves underneath a lilting, folk-tinged score that rises when a sail catches. Sailing between islands is slow and unhurried, the kind of pottering exploration you can drift through on a lazy afternoon or with the game running quietly while you do something else. Its mood is warm, whimsical and low-stakes, with a current of wistful nostalgia rather than real dread. Combat is brisk and cartoonish, with some sharp moments but no gore, and nothing here lingers on cruelty or fear. It suits players who want a playful, sunny adventure to wander through at their own pace, especially those who enjoy puzzle-solving, boating and a gentle sense of discovery.
