The story

Discover the origins of Shulk as he and his companions clash against a seemingly-unstoppable mechanical menace. Wield a future-seeing blade, chain together attacks, and carefully position your party members in strategic, real-time combat as you journey across a massive world.

What it’s like

Wide, sweeping vistas dominate here: rolling grassland, glittering seas and towering organic landscapes that feel more like living creatures than terrain, rendered in saturated, painterly colour with a soft, hand-tuned glow on the Switch's modest screen. The mood shifts constantly between awe and quiet unease, from golden-hour plains to ruined colossi half-swallowed by vegetation. The score is the centrepiece: orchestral swells and wistful melodies that rise over open fields and drop into tense, percussive battle themes, with long stretches of ambient wind and birdsong between. Combat is real-time but deliberate, a rhythm of positioning, chaining attacks and watching for the next threat, so the pace is brisk in fights and unhurried everywhere else, with long walks and optional side wandering. Its tone is earnest and philosophical, a slow-building story about identity, fate and what people owe one another, with warm friendships and a hopeful, bittersweet register. Violence is sustained but stylised: frequent battles against mechanical and monstrous foes, with occasional grim scenes of war and loss, but no gore and no sexual content. It suits long evenings with a controller, comfort-level immersion, and players who want an epic, reflective fantasy with strategic depth.
