The story

The Definitive Edition includes all the content from the original release of the acclaimed DRAGON QUEST XI, and adds extra character-specific scenarios, the choice of playing with the original soundtrack or a grand orchestral version of the music, the ability to switch between 2D and 3D graphic modes, a Japanese voice-acting option, and much more.

What it’s like

Bright, painterly fantasy in saturated greens, sky blues and sunset oranges, with chibi-proportioned characters drawn in clean anime lines against lush hand-painted backdrops of villages, forests and sea coasts. The game can be flipped between a crisp 3D view and a nostalgic 2D pixel-art mode, so the same wandering landscape feels either modern or like a warm memory of an old console. Music is the signature: the orchestral arrangement swells in big brass and strings on open roads, while the original soundtrack's chiptune melodies bring a gentle retro charm, and it is pleasant to leave running while cooking or tidying. Roaming encounters and turn-based battles set a steady, unhurried rhythm, with long stretches of exploring, chatting with townsfolk and collecting small rewards. Vibe: cozy, nostalgic, earnest and optimistic, a comfort game for a lazy weekend or long evenings on the couch. Intensity is low: fights are cartoonish with bursts of sparkling spell effects and no gore, though some characters face sad, emotional moments. Best suited to people who love classic JRPGs, sweet adventure stories and games they can settle into at their own pace.
