The story

Xenoblade Chronicles X: Definitive Edition is an expanded version of Monolith Soft’s open-world science fiction role-playing game. Set after Earth is destroyed in an interstellar war, the game follows survivors who crash-land on the alien planet Mira and establish the city of New Los Angeles. Players join the military organization BLADE, explore Mira’s regions, complete missions, recruit party members and later pilot humanoid mechs known as Skells. Compared with the original Wii U release, the Definitive Edition includes enhanced visuals, interface, and gameplay adjustments, new story elements, and additional content.

What it’s like

Wide, sweeping vistas dominate here: alien grasslands and jagged mountain ridges under a shifting sky, with the day and night cycle turning the planet from bright teal-green meadows into deep violet dusk and starry, bioluminescent dark. Rendering is clean and saturated, with a glossy, slightly stylised anime sheen on the human characters and a painterly sense of distance across the land. The soundtrack swells with orchestral strings and wide, hopeful brass during exploration, then drops into quiet ambient pads and wind when you're alone in the wilds. Pacing is unhurried and open-ended: long stretches of wandering, scanning, and side tasks punctuated by bursts of mech combat piloting towering Skells. The emotional register is earnest and sincere, with a gentle melancholy about lost homes and an arc of strangers slowly becoming a family. Violence is present in stylised mech battles against alien creatures, with no gore and little that lingers. Good for long weekend sessions, late-night solo play, or anyone who wants a vast, sincere sci-fi world to get lost in.
