The story

The Longest Journey is an amazing graphical adventure, where the player controls the protagonist, April Ryan, on her journey between parallel universes. Embark on an exciting and original journey of discovery, where you will explore, solve puzzles, meet new people, face terrifying monsters, learn, grow, and live the adventure of a lifetime!

What it’s like

Painted, pre-rendered backdrops with a slightly stiff, storybook quality, and a cool, misty palette that shifts sharply between worlds: rain-slick grey streets lit by dim neon and smokestack haze in one place, then sunlit forests, gold-green canopies and warm stone in another. The camera holds still on each scene, so the pace belongs to the player, who clicks through rooms, reads the environment and lingers over small details. The soundscape is mostly ambient: distant machinery, wind, birdsong and a restrained, melodic score that swells at quiet turns. The mood is wistful and mysterious, with a thread of unease that deepens into dread around ominous creatures and dark corridors. Violence is minimal and bloodless, with a few tense, startling moments and no gore. Rather than rushing, the rhythm rewards patience, curiosity and careful thinking, and it suits a slow evening alone, a rainy afternoon, or an unhurried stretch with headphones on. It is for people who enjoy thoughtful puzzles, layered worldbuilding, and a gentle sense of wonder with a shadow over it.
