The story

Reporter John Klein is plunged into a world of impossible terror when fate draws him to the sleepy West Virginia town of Point Pleasant, whose residents are being visited by a great winged shape that sows hideous nightmares and fevered visions.

What it’s like

Murky, desaturated night and fog-bound small-town gloom, with the cold green-grey cast of a dying autumn in West Virginia. Director Mark Pellington shoots in restless handheld bursts and disorienting close-ups, cutting between motel-room stillness, flickering television static, and sudden jolts of dream imagery, while the score leans on low drones and eerie, unsettling silences. The mood is paranoid and sleepless, a slow-building unease that tips into hallucination and sustained dread rather than gore. Violence is sparse and mostly implied, though some images are frightening and a few scenes of death and disturbing visions land hard. The emotional register is grief-tinged and unsettled, following a widowed reporter who is pulled into a mystery he cannot shake, with the tension cresting in quieter, haunting moments. It suits a late-night watch alone with the lights off, and it is for viewers who enjoy atmospheric, ambiguous supernatural thrillers over jump-scare spectacle.
