The story

The Passage is a novel by Justin Cronin, published in 2010 by Ballantine Books, a division of Random House, Inc., New York. The Passage debuted at #3 on the New York Times hardcover fiction best seller list, and remained on the list for seven additional weeks. It is the first novel of a completed trilogy; the second book The Twelve was released in 2012, and the third book The City of Mirrors released in 2016.

What it’s like

Long, unhurried chapters that shift between sprawling, cinematic set pieces and quiet, intimate interiors, with prose that moves from clipped, documentary-style procedure to lush, almost mythic description of a ruined world. The mood is melancholy and sweeping, with a steady undertow of dread: scenes of ordinary life in a government research compound give way to vast, sun-bleached wastelands and dim, candlelit settlements where the night feels genuinely unsafe. Violence is present and often brutal, with attacks by creatures described in unflinching detail, though gore is more about bodily horror than prolonged torture, and there is little sexual content. Pacing is patient in the early sections and accelerates into long stretches of pursuit and survival. Its people carry the weight of loss and responsibility, and the arcs follow a damaged young girl and the adults who fail, protect, and slowly change around her. It suits a long weekend, a long-haul flight, or a late-night reading session with the lamp on, and it is for readers who enjoy epic post-apocalyptic scale, slow-burn dread, and character-heavy storytelling.
