The story

A slab of food descends down a vertical facility. The residents above eat heartily, leaving those below starving and desperate. A rebellion is imminent.

What it’s like

Harsh, sterile light and a claustrophobic vertical geometry define this Spanish sci-fi thriller: a single cell-like room is framed in flat, clinical whites and greys, with the camera locked tight on bodies pressed against concrete and steel. The palette stays cold and fluorescent, broken only by the blood-red and gore-brown of the food, and the sound design leans on mechanical hums, distant shrieks and the grind of the descending platform, with almost no score to soften it. Its vibe is bleak, feverish and corrosive, a cautionary allegory about hunger and hierarchy that suits a late-night watch when you want to feel uneasy rather than comforted. Pacing is brisk and escalating, with long stretches of tense standoff punctuated by sudden, sharp outbursts. Its arcs follow a naive man learning the rules of a brutal system and slowly losing his sense of decency. Intensity is high: frequent graphic violence, gore, cannibalism, and cruelty, with some sexual content and sustained dread. It is not gentle. It is for viewers who want an unflinching, politically pointed nightmare and are comfortable with discomfort.
