The story

As a deadly battle rages over Jigsaw's brutal legacy, a group of Jigsaw survivors gathers to seek the support of self-help guru and fellow survivor Bobby Dagen, a man whose own dark secrets unleash a new wave of terror.

What it’s like

Harsh, grimy fluorescent light over sterile warehouse sets and drab institutional rooms, with the chill of a cold, damp basement threaded through every scene. The camera is mostly handheld and jittery during the traps, cutting fast between close-up mechanisms, ticking clocks and spattered skin, then settling into static, slightly stagey medium shots when the characters talk. The palette is bleached and brown-grey with flashes of blood red, and the sound is a steady industrial drone, metallic clanks and sudden stings, with long stretches of tense quiet. The vibe is grim, cynical, and mechanically cruel, best suited to a late-night horror binge with the lights off or a rainy evening when you want something loud and nasty. The pacing is quick and set-piece driven, with the characters' arcs about guilt, manipulation and survivors turning on one another rather than redemption. Intensity is high: graphic gore, brutal torture and visible injury, plus strong profanity, sadistic cruelty and frequent violence, though the body horror is more gruesome than sexual. It is for hardcore horror fans who enjoy gory puzzle traps and bleak, twisty moral games, and not for anyone wanting anything gentle.
