The story
A prequel set before the haunting of the Lambert family that reveals how gifted psychic Elise Rainier reluctantly agrees to use her ability to contact the dead in order to help a teenage girl who has been targeted by a dangerous supernatural entity.
What it’s like
Dim, cold interiors lit by a single lamp or a flickering phone screen, with the frame often left to hold empty corridors and doorways that feel wrong long before anything appears in them. The palette runs to teal, slate and sickly grey, and the camera moves in patient, unhurried push-ins before cutting to a sudden stinger of sound. The score favours low drones and silence broken by sharp audio hits, so the dread builds in the quiet and then lands hard. The vibe is clammy, uneasy suspense with a gentle, nostalgic warmth around its older medium at the centre. It suits a late-night watch with the lights off, or a Halloween-season rewatch when you want to be startled rather than horrified. Pacing is steady, with long stretches of tension and regular jolts; the emotional register stays wary and protective, following a reluctant healer who is pulled back into work she has tried to leave behind. Violence is limited; the threat is supernatural, with creepy apparitions and frightening set pieces but little gore, and no sexual content. Fear is the main intensity, delivered through jump scares and eerie imagery rather than brutality. It is for people who want a chilling, atmospheric ghost story that leans on sound and suggestion more than blood.
