The story

When his long-lost outlaw father returns, Tommy "White Knife" Stockburn goes on an adventure-filled journey across the Old West with his five brothers.

What it’s like

Bright, sun-blasted desert light and wide, dusty Western vistas give the look of a broad studio comedy, with saturated earth tones, big panoramic establishing shots, and a lot of bustling frontier-town clutter in the frame. The camera stays fairly conventional and busy, cutting quickly between slapstick set pieces, sprawling group shots of the brothers, and sunny exteriors that feel more like a theme-park ride than a moody Western. The sound is brassy and cheerful, with a jaunty orchestral score that leans on twangy comic stingers and a steady stream of goofy one-liners. Vibe-wise it is light, goofy and irreverent, the sort of thing for a lazy afternoon or a relaxed weekend with friends and snacks. Pacing is loose and episodic, with gags arriving in bursts and the emotional core kept simple: a family of gruff, mismatched brothers slowly coming together around a long-absent father. The violence is cartoonish and mostly bloodless, with plenty of pratfalls, fistfights and gunplay played for laughs; there is some crude humour and mild innuendo, but no real menace or gore. It suits people who want an easygoing, silly Western that is easy to laugh along with and asks nothing of them.
